Tengen as first move has a fascinating attraction to many Go players. The center of the universe, the point of symmetry, the move which should win the game when God would be playing, a nice move to play in a lightning game. All true probably.
John Fairnbairn wrote a noteworthy article about the history of the Tengen play especially with respect to the shin fuseki (new opening) period.
