Obayashi Cup

Introduction

The Obayashi Cup is a two day weekend tournament. The first day features a four round Macmahon tournament with prizes for all players with 2, 3 and 4 points. The top 16 of the Macmahon tournament qualify for the playoff tournament (a four round knockout) which is played on the next day. Side events include simultaneous games with a professional Go player, and the youth tournament. Besides, the semi-final and final of the playoff tournament is analyzed for life audience by the attending Japanese professional.

The first edition (1992)

The establishment of the Obayashi Cup has proofed to be a huge success, both in terms of the number of attendants, as in their satisfaction with the tournament and its formula.

The second edition (1993)

Please see the next pictures for some statistics on rank and country distribution of the players during the second Obayashi Cup:

The third edition (1994)

The third Obayashi Cup showed a stable number of participants (154). Please read the article which has been posted on rec.games.go for a detailed report on this edition of the tournament.

The fourth edition (1995)

During the fourth Obayashi Cup we had an extra-ordinary number of participants. 205 Go players from all over Europe found their way to the European Go Centre to battle and enjoy themselves on and over the Go board.
Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Mr. Sanjo Yutaka, the general manager of the sponsor Obayashi Corporation who was followed up by Mr. Yoshida Kaoru this year. While slightly worried about the future of the Cup because of this change in the management we were immediately assured about the continuation of the tournament by its new manager.
Please check out our full report on the tournament for all results, games, and the result of the questionnaire which was held this year.

The fifth edition (1996)

The Obayashi Cup tournament keeps on growing. 228 participants battle for one of the 16 places in the play-off tournament resulting in maybe one of the strongest knock-out tournaments played in the Obayashi Cup. After three rounds of severe battling on the go board an all-female final results. Please read the details and replay the final game from the report page. This was the last Obayashi Cup I organized.

The sixth edition (6 & 7 September 1997)

A report on the 6th Obayashi Cup can be found on the pages of the European Go Cultural Centre.
