Results and report of the 3rd Obayashi Cup (played on the 3 & 4 September 1994).
The Obayashi Cup is a two day tournament. On the first day a four round Macmahon tournament is played with prizes for players with 2, 3 and 4 points. The top 16 of the Macmahon tournament qualify for a playoff tournament. This 4 round knockout tournament is played on the next day (so Sunday).
This year we had an ex equo for the 16th place. Normally, a lightning game would have decided which player would qualify for the playoff but since one of the players involved (Koopman) had already left the tournament place (thus being overly pessimistic) the organisation had no choice but to automatically seed the other player (Vanderstappen).
The knockout featured the following players:

Notice that three female Go players qualified for the playoff
this year. The players are seeded according to the place they
finished in the Macmahon tournament. This expects the following
semifinal and final:
Gerald Westhoff - Shen Guangji
Zhang Shutai - Guo Juan
So again the tournament seemed to converge to an all Chinese final (like the first two editions of the tournament). However, things didn't proceed as usual this year...
In the first round there were no real surprising results, so for
the second round we had the following players lines up:
Westhoff - Janssen
Dickhut - Guo
Shen - Zhao
Gerlach - Zhang
Zhang Shutai quickly finished his game with Gerlach. This was
the only "easy" game this round. All other games were fierce
battles. Guo Juan misread the position and lost. Shen eventually
won from Zhao, and after having lead, Westhoff (who was sick
during the tournament) saw his time run out against Janssen.
This left the following players lined up for the semi-finals:
Janssen - Dickhut
Shen - Zhang
According to Obayashi tournament rules, the top half game of the semi-final moves to the Japanese style room, enabling the audience to watch the game by the internal video system of the European Go Centre. Both the semifinal and final game is analysed by the attending Japanese professional, Mr. Saijo Masataka, 8 dan. The Janssen-Dickhut game, eagerly observed by the audience and smoothly but relentlessly analysed by the professional, proceeds typically: white leads, black leads, white leads, ... In the end Franz-Josef Dickhut, not quite trusting his (small) lead decides to start an action in the center which turns out to be mochi-komi (loss without compensation) thus actually leading to his defeat.
The other game, between Shen and Zhang is all Zhang from the start. But then, during the late middle game Zhang slips up in (again) a center fight, while missing a few chances to still settling the shape in his favor. Eventually Zhang's flag drops while being behind by the smallest margins on the board (.5 point).
So, the deciding game for the Obayashi Cup didn't become an
all-Chinese affair after all:
Frank Janssen - Shen Guangji
Frank Janssen builds a moyo to counter Shen's "territory greedy" opening strategy. However, Shen immediately invades, getting an unreasonably good result because unfortunately Frank slips up in this fight. The game thus soon gets a flavor of an uphill battle for the latter. Of course he tries to complicate matters wherever possible, but overdoing things forces him to resign the game after some 3/4 hour of play. Reluctantly the players enter the commentary hall afraid for a possible disappointed audience. But they are received with a warm applause and Saijo sensei quickly goes over the game with them to enlighten both the players and the audience on some points.
This concluded this years Obayashi Cup.
