Explanation:
The players weaker than 8 dan play a knockout tournament for one
place in the challenger tournament, the stronger the player the
later s/he joins the knockout. For example, Yoda Norimoto joins
the knockout tournament in the 5th round. The 7 dan players are
an exception to the rules just outlined: the winner goes through
to the challenger tournament (O Meien in this edition) while the
looser joins the knockout tournament (6th and last round).
Strictly speaken, the 8 and 9 dan preliminary finals are not of
any influence to the proceeding of the tournament. They merely
play for the prize money of the 8- and 9-dan tournament.
