The Guksu (National Champion) title features a 8 player double knockout system to determine the challenger. The winners of the winner and loser section play a best of 3 match to determine the challenger. The title is decided in a best of 5 match with 5 hours thinking time and 1 minute byo-yomi.

The Guksu title match was reduced to a best-of-three match in 1998 due to financial reasons of the sponsor.

This tournament was aborted after the last edition in 2015. However, it was resurrected as Kuksu Cup, a torunament for young and talented players.
