biography Fujisawa Shuko, Born June 14, 1925 in Yokohama, Japan. Original name was Tamotsu. Became student at Nihon Kiin in 1934. First major title: 5th Top Position Title, 1960; 1st Meijin Title, 1962, edging Sakata Eio and Go Seigen. Lost 2nd and 3rd Meijin Title to Sakata but defeated Rin Kaiho in 1970 to win 9th Meijin Title. Winner 2nd & 5th Pro Best Ten Titles in 1965 & 1968; 15th Oza, 1967, holding it three straight years; NHK Cup twice and Haya-go title once;1st Tengen Title, 1976. Winner 1st Kisei Title, 1977 defending it five additional years and so becoming Honorary Kisei. Winner of 1st Prime Minister's Cup, 1957. Winner of 39th Oza Title in 1991 at the age of 66, defending it the next year to set a new record as the oldest player to defend a title. Winner of many other titles and awards. Winner of KIDO magazine "Special Award" in 1988, Shusai Award once. 1993 record: 11 wins, 15 losses. One of the "Three Crows", together with Yamabe Toshiro and Suzuki Keizo. Retired in 1998. Got expelled from the Nihon Kiin in 1999 because Fujisawa started to sell diploma's to amateurs by himself for a fee which is not in accordance with the fee charged by the Nihon Kiin. The point of this discrepancy is that Fujisawa reasons that the diploma fee is much too high, while the Nihon Kiin considers the diploma fee partly as a donation to their organisation. The consequence is that starting from 1999 Fujisawa Shuko was erased from the professional lists of the Nihon Kiin. Lives in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa.
