Hashimoto Utaro, 9 dan Born Feb. 27, 1907 in Osaka, Japan.
Died July 24, 1994.
First major title: 2nd, 5th & 6th Honinbo Titles, 1943, 1950-51.
Particularly noteworthy is the 6th Honinbo Title Match. Trailing
Sakata Eio, 7 dan, 1-3 before the fifth game, Hashimoto declared
that he had "washed his neck in anticipation of the stroke of
execution." He won that game and the next two to become upset
victor. Lost 3rd Honinbo Title Match in 1945 which featured Game
2 played on the outskirts of Hiroshima when the atomic bomb
exploded. Winner 1st & 9th 10 Dan Titles, 1962 & 1971; 1st, 3rd
& 4th Oza Titles, 1953, 1955-6; 7th Pro Best 10 (defeating Kato
Masao 3-0), 1970. Winner NHK Cup 2 times; 2nd Haya-go
Championship, 1970. Finalist in 1st Kisei Title, 1977.
Founded Kansai Kiin in 1950 and was Chief Director of same.
Lived in Kobe City, Hyogo.
