Kato Masao, Born Mar. 15, 1947 in Fukuoka, Japan.
First major title: 1st Gosei & 14th 10 Dan Titles, 1976, finally
realizing his great potential after challenging for eight titles
unsuccessfully (Honinbo, Pro Best Ten twice, All Japan #1, Prime
Minister's & NHK Cup, Shinei and Nihon Kiin Championship). Won
32nd Honinbo Title, 1977, holding it three straight years. In
1979 held five titles: Honinbo, 10 Dan, Tengen, Oza and Kakusei.
In 1987 held four titles: Meijin, 10 Dan, Gosei and Oza. Defended
Oza Title eight straight years (eleven titles total), 10 Dan
Title four straight years (five titles total). Winner of NHK Cup
1988, NEC Cup 1991. Regained Oza Title in 1993.
Winner of Oteai top section twice. Winner of KIDO magazine "Most
Outstanding Player" award six times, Shusai Award five times.
1993 record: 40 wins, 22 losses.
Lives in Tokyo, Japan.
