First major title: 31st Honinbo Title, 1976, after challenging
for the same title two years before. Lost title to Kato Masao the
next year but won 35th Honinbo Title,1980. Lost title following
year. Became Honinbo for the third time by taking 40th Honinbo
Title in 1985 and held it four straight years. Winner 36th NHK
Cup, 1989, 28th 10 Dan Title, 1990 and defended it two more
years, Fujitsu Cup, 1988 & 89. Early in career known as "Pro Best
Ten Boy" because of wins in that tournament.
Winner of Oteai top section twice, lower section once. Winner of
NEC Cup twice, Haya-go once, Prime Minister's Cup two times.
Winner of 12 KIDO magazine awards, Shusai Award one time. 1993
record: 20 wins, 21 losses.
