The Myungin (Meijin) tournament featured an 8 player league to determine the challenger. When the league ends in a tie a (possibly multiple round) knockout is played to decide the challenger. The old-style Myungin tournament featured a 16 player knockout tournament to determine the challenger. The last two left played a best of 3 to determine the challenger. The title is decided in a best of 5 match with 5 hours thinking time and 1 minute byo-yomi.
