Introduction

When thinking moyo (large potential territories) one player automatically comes to mind: Takemiya Masaki. This category shows some fine examples of how moyo's should be build and used.

The best moyo game I have ever seen. (I saw a lot of Takemiya's games and surprisingly it's not one of them). To my mind what make this game exceptional is:

  • The moyo set in the begining is extraordinary big (black 35)
  • The moyo is used exactly as it should. "fighting spirit". All is transformed.
  • White is playing his role: spectacular invasions, on the edge (tremendeous sequence 138 through 166 to get life)
  • The game is a 5 point close game even if white resign.

To my mind the best Takemiya game (surprisingly not with black and not with moyo). Even if the game has a pretty fuseki it doesn't seems exceptional on first glance, but if we stare more carefuly we can see that after move 49 white has no territory and no moyo! But will win the game without stealing! What miracle...? Fight and radiation of white stones.

Black builds a large moyo and Cho (who else would take up such a challenge) plunges in. Please take note of the relaxed way black executes his attack. In the end white loses one of his groups and undertakes an all or nothing attempt which is skillfully handled by Yamashita.

Black builds a quarter-board moyo (move 43) forcing white to enter it. However, Takemiya proves remorseless, killing the intruder. The whole game takes a mere 101 moves.

This time the perfect moyo is established at move 33. While Cho has taken huge amounts of territory the size of the moyo forces him to enter it and while being attacked to allow Takemiya to destroy most of Cho's territories.

Takemiya building a moyo as white this time. A great display of moyo building at its best.

Cho Chikun, who in the previous examples in this category was rather "a target" of Takemiya Masaki shows that he also can build quite huge moyo. Or rather he used to built big moyos, since the game was played in 1974.
